Meaning “elephant” in the local Herero language, Ozondjou is a fitting name for this wild, off-grid camp, one of the few places in the world where wild, desert-adapted elephants roam alongside your tent. Location-wise, it’s on the banks of the Ugab River in northern Damaraland at the end of a 4×4 track where Wi-Fi doesn’t reach (perfect). Nine twin tents are scattered around a central lounge, dining area and fire pit, and most meals are cooked outdoors on open flame.
The camp operates alongside Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA), the conservation organisation responsible for keeping the peace between the elephants and the farming communities they share the land with – and a portion of every booking goes directly to their work. In fact, the signature experience (and the reason most guests visit) is a full-day elephant tracking excursion on day two, spent on foot with the EHRA team.
